What You Need to know About the New Instagram Terms of Service

Recently, Instagram announced that their Terms of Service would change on Jan. 16th…and made the new terms available to members ahead of the change so they could read over them and decide whether to stay with the service or not.

And then there was a great outcry from many Instragram users…all because of one paragraph that was included in the new TOS.

It reads:

To help us deliver interesting paid or sponsored content or promotions, you agree that a business or other entity may pay us to display your username, likeness, photos (along with any associated metadata), and/or actions you take, in connection with paid or sponsored content or promotions, without any compensation to you.

Many users panicked after reading this, believing that photos they had shared of their children playing at a well known landmark would now possibly appear in ads for said landmark after having been sold off by Instagram.

There was much speculation and confusion that followed…and many users said they planned to close their accounts and move to other services such as Flickr.

Finally, Instagram responded with this statement and said they have no intention of selling their users photos and that they will work to re-word their TOS to make it easier to understand very soon.

So that’s that.

We appreciate that Instagram responded to users concerns so quickly and intend to stay with the service we love and use on daily basis.

  1. Instagram is going to lose some traffic over their policy and twitter is also coming out with a filter so there will not really be a need. They have built a communty though so only time will tell.
